Alien Species

In many big cities, nature is contained to carefully curated spaces where it is allowed to exist as long as it does not disturb our day to day. In that context nature becomes an adornment to own, control and to benefit from. The same occurs with cultural diversity. It is welcomed as long as it does not present a challenge. In that way, some foreigners are more welcomed than others. Within the current political landscape, being an immigrant, and a person of color is often a dangerous thing. When we leave home to a new place it is tempting to play down your own ‘otherness’, to not draw any attention, to contain oneself.

Alien Species is an exhibition that makes us look at cultural diversity, and the political realities surrounding it, through the lens of biodiversity. Just as there are many flowers we haven’t seen yet, there are many realities unknown to us. The world is a lot bigger than it seems. These paintings are created through the showcasing of plants and animals, many of them unique to Latin America, existing in their most lush colorful selves, being loud and telling stories from a reality far away.
